It is largest monastery in Tibet, Drepung situated in the Gambo Utse Mountain slightly out from the downtown, which makes it a easy halt while travelling in Lhasa. In the early time 1930’s that was the busiest time of Drepung monastery shelter of 10,000 monks at one time. Today it will remain approximately 300 monks live it up here within the walls of Drepung. The monastery is really amazing and beautiful, with vivid color. The monks rove the halls within the complex in deep red robes that makes an attractive contrast in color that you can’t take your eyes off.

It is situated at the foot of Tatipu Hill which is in the northern suburb of Lhasa City, Sera Monastery  is considered in  one of three famous monasteries across city along with the Drepung Monastery and the Ganden Monastery. It is assign to the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect, a department of Tibetan Buddhism, it is established by Tsong Khapa. Jamchen Chojey, one of Tsong Khapa’s disciples constructed it in 1419 under the time of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The monastery was named Sera that means wild rose in the Tibetan language, because the hill at the back of it was sheeted with wild roses in bloom when it was established.

The monastery is amazing and covers an area of 114,946 square meters (28 acres). and some chief buildings are the Coqen Hall, Zhacang (college) and Kamcun (dormitory). in all Scriptures mention there every word  in gold powder, fine statues, scent cloth and unparalleled murals can be found in these halls. Colorful debates on Buddhist doctrines are captured here and these employ a style discriminate from those at Lhasa’s other famous monasteries.
