History of Kanyakumari Beach

Often referred to as ‘Cape Comorin’, Kanyakumari Beach lies at the southernmost tip of mainland India. This beautiful town of Tamil Nadu is located at the intersection of the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Mannar. Being a coastal town, it is a major hub for trade and commerce. The place gets its name from the goddess of Kanyakumari. From temples to beaches to monuments, there are plenty of places to see in Kanyakumari.

The name comes from the Devi Kanya Kumari Temple in the region. It is the southernmost tip of peninsular India. Kanyakumari town is the southern tip of the Cardamom Hills, an extension of the Western Ghats range. The nearest town is Nagercoil, the administrative headquarters of Kanyakumari District.

The mixed culture of Kanyakumari is reflected in its architectural style and cuisine. Hindus and Christians form the major part of the population. Tamil and Malayalam are two of the predominant languages of the region. Kathakali is the traditional dance form of the place. Some of the major festivals celebrated in the place are Chaitra Purnima, Navratri and the Holy Annual Festival of the Catholic Church.

From sightseeing to shopping, there are numerous things to do in Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari Beach is among the most popular places to visit in Kanyakumari. It is the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. It is known for its splendid views of the sunset and sunrise. The beach has a light house which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding. Vivekananda Rock Memorial is one of the chief Kanyakumari attractions. It lies 500 metres off the shore. It is built on the top of two rocks and at a height of around 17 metres above the sea level, making it one of the most enchanting places in Southern India.

Kanyakumari sightseeing is incomplete without visiting the Padmanabhapuram Palace. Gandhi Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue and Kumari Amman Temple are some of the other important Kanyakumari places to visit.

Kanya Kumari is notable for pilgrimage and tourism. The place takes its name from the goddess Devi Kanya Kumari, considered to be a sister of Krishna. Women pray to her for marriage. The temple here is a Shakti Peetha, one of the holiest shrines of the Mother goddess. Also nearby are eleven sacred theertham.
