5 Ways You Can Enjoy the Best of winters in Ladakh
1. Tso Moriri
Tso Moriri is very beautiful and also freezes completely during winters. Located 211 km from Leh in Changthang, Tso Moriri is higher in altitude than Pangong Tso.
The lake is fed by springs and snow-melt from neighboring mountains. Most water enters the lake in two major stream systems, one entering the lake from the north, the other from the southwest.
2. Nubra Valley
Already considered a valley with immense beauty, Nubra gets even more beautiful in January owing to the snowfall and climate.
3. Hemis National Park
The animals which tourists can spot in this sanctuary include snow leopards and Ibex. The ideal place to spot the snow leopards in this sanctuary is the Shang Valley. Apart from these two animals, the sanctuary is also home to bharal, wolf, Pallas’ cat and others. The Hemis monastery is an added bonus for those who seek peace and calm.
During peak winter (mid-December to February end), Pangong Tso becomes completely frozen and hard enough for cars to drive on! The lake has now been famous by many Bollywood movies like 3 Idiots and Jab Tak Hai Jaan and is now crumbling under the pressure of the heavy tourist inflow.
5. Hunder Sand Dunes
In addition to presenting beautiful and contrasting views of nature, Hunder is also popular for its flora and fauna which include sea-buckthorn forests, rare Bactrian double-humped camels, yaks and Pashmina goats.
